Boiler breakdowns – 1st Action’s most memorable call centre stories

Boiler Breakdown in Snow

Boiler Breakdown in Snow

In January 2010 Britain experienced one of the longest prolonged cold spells since 1996. This meant 1st Actions call centre was inundated with calls about boiler breakdowns and pipes freezing over which called for emergency action from our engineers.

One of the more prominent calls was from an elderly couple that called up during the cold spell complaining about their boiler breakdown and also a feeling of tiredness.

This sounded dangerous and 1st Action was very glad they called.

On arrival at the scene the engineer said it was one of the worst scenes he had ever come across and that there was carbon monoxide leaking into their living room. He immediately cut off their boiler but could not supply the relevant boiler parts until the next day. This prompted our engineer to supply the couple with electric heaters for the night. The boiler was fixed early the next morning and the couple now have a safer boiler.

Danger of Poisoning your family with Carbon Monoxide

The ever present threat of Carbon Monoxide (CO)

I know we always seem to go on about it and our advice page is always carrying our warnings on Carbon Monoxide poisoning but  we have highlighted three cases this week that fortunately had happy endings but could each have been tales of terrible tragedy

Regular Gas Safety Checks

If you have not had your boiler and gas appliances checked please call us on 0800 1 123999. It could be so serious – make sure you have had a gas safety check

Californian Family Escape from there Apartment Home

Just two days ago 11th Feb 2010, a carbon monoxide leak sent a Californian couple along with their four children to the hospital, along with three fire-fighters who responded to the family’s late-night emergency call.

Mum was wakened by the crying of her 2 yearold daughter but when she went to see what the problem was she collapsed in the hallway. Dad woke up when he heard his wife collapse on the floor and called the emergency number about 11 p.m.

Emergency crews were treating the stricken woman when her son also passed out, The firefighters began to suspect that there was a gas leak in the house. They moved the family outside and an air test confirmed that there were high levels of carbon monoxide inside the appartment

Medics took the family and three of the fire fighters who complained of possible minor carbon monoxide exposure but none of the eight was believed to have life-threatening symptoms.

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless and potentially deadly gas that had leaked from a propane stove in the family’s garage.

The family had used the appliance to cook a turkey earlier in the evening and had left only one small door open for ventilation. It was very fortunate for this family that one of the children woke up and started the whole emergency response but it could have been so different

Emergency Services save family of three in Ohio

On the same day in Harrison Township, Ohio, emergency services were called to a home early in the morning after a woman made a frantic call for help.

As soon as they arrived they realised that the situation for the mother and three children was critical.

They were considered to be very lucky to be alive at this point as experts discovered that the home was saturated to a deadly 195 parts per million of carbon monoxide

Carbon Monoxide Detectors important in any home

Yearly maintenance on your boiler the is key to staying safe. Carbon monoxide detectors are also important and this home did not have one. Authorities said the family was lucky.

27 Children and three Carers Poisoned by Carbon Monoxide in Pamplona

These incidents were just three days after 27 children and 3 carers at a nursery in Pamplona, Spain were taken to hospital suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning on Monday.

A defective heater may have been responsible for the poisoning of the children and  carers in the town, said emergency services.

Most of those affected had suffered only mild poisoning, authorities said.

1st Action – London Plumbers in the News

1st Action London Plumbers in the News

The London office of 1st Action was in the news this week.

1st Action on BBC Working Lunch

Richard Clarke the company chairman was asked by the BBC programme ‘Working Lunch’, on Tuesday 15th December for his opinion on the new support proposed by the government for apprenticeships.

As an employer already supporting apprenticeships he welcomed the announcement and said that the company would be reviewing its policy and perhaps being able to employ one or two additional apprentices.

He considers that despite the excellent classroom training being provided by current courses, this did not replace the absolute importance of on job training and experience.

‘We have always been concerned that young people who have been on a course and been given a qualification have been led to believe that it entitles them to the earnings of a fully qualified experienced plumber. They must learn that to be a good jobbing plumber they need a great deal of experience in problem solving on the ground. It is what we need for our customers.

Apprenticeship Training

Our engineers train to be plumbers, gas boiler engineers, heating engineers and install new heating boilers

He did however say that the cost involved in training an apprentice was considerably greater than £2,500 but any help was very much appreciated.

The programme showed parts of the London administration centre so take a look at some of the staff who answer your calls.

Chancellor’s Boiler Scrappage Scheme from April 2010

New Boiler – Scrappage Scheme

It has been asked for since July this year and after the tremendous success of the car scrappage scheme Alistair Darling anounced a boiler scrappage scheme for old inefficient boilers in his pre budget announcements today

In his report the Chancellor said

‘Each inefficient boiler adds over £200 to household bills and one tonne of carbon to the atmosphere a year.

Building on our successful car scrappage scheme, I will help up to 125,000 homes replace the most inefficient boilers with new models.’

He has pledged £200 million to improve energy efficiency and tackle fuel poverty by: offering £400 for up to 125,000 households to upgrade their old boilers to the latest efficient models with a greener boiler incentive; and providing extra resources for Warm Front to help 75,000 of the most vulnerable households with heating and insulation.

Answers still needed on Scrappage Scheme

There are still some serious questions that will need answering before the deal can be rolled out to the 125,000 homes that will benefit from the scheme.

We understand that it comes into effect in April 2010 but we need to find out what people should do between now and then and what equipment will qualify and which won’t?

Proof of scrappage on cars was easy as every car had to be taxed and MOT’d at the time of the scrappage but how will boiler scrappage be established?

Like so many Government announcements we are left to wonder whether it has been fully thought through.

We do see it as an excellent help to solve the problem that we encounter almost every day of old inefficient gas boilers that burn too much fuel and are creating too much CO2

Book for New Boiler Scrappage Installations

We will keep you posted and as soon as we have the details will be taking bookings for new installations to make sure that our clients can get their £400 before it runs out.

Fight for Plumb Jobs – Evening Standard 4th Nov 2009

Letter from the Chairmans Office

London Plumbers argue in court

I was surprised and disappointed to see two London plumbing firms arguing in public over celebrity customers.

We would like to reassure all our 1st Action customers that their information is absolutely safe with us.

As one of London’s leading plumbing firms, 1st Action has been established in the capital for over fifteen years and we try to treat all our customers as ‘celebrities’

We believe our clients are quite free to use whoever they choose to provide them with the service to solve their plumbing or heating emergency and it is our privilege to be chosen.

25,000 Customers in London choose 1st Action

We are delighted that over 25,000 customers in London each year choose 1st Action.

We have very sophisticated computer software to protect the information that is given to us by all our customers and this information is never disclosed to any other parties.

All our administrative staff with access to this confidential information sign confidentiality agreements within their contracts of employment and would certainly be prosecuted through the courts if we had any evidence of such a breach. I have to say though that in fifteen years we have never had such a case.

We spend many hundreds of thousands of pounds each year advertising our telephone number in directories, the internet and newspapers to make sure that it is easily available to customers who will usually be needing it in an emergency.

I can understand that Mr Mullins would feel aggrieved if after such an expense his customers were being stolen or even being taken unfairly but I can’t help asking whether there is another hidden agenda in this action which he has decided to play out so publicly. We would not possibly condone theft of any confidential data that might give a commercial advantage and if this is the case it should be properly dealt with but I don’t think that it does any of us any favours to make the dispute so public before anything is proved.

The legal fees in these cases reach astronomic proportions and I recall advice given to me many years ago that such legal battles are either for the very rich or very foolish and perhaps Mr Mullins feels that he is now the former and feels he wants to eliminate a new upstart.

1st Action Undertaking

Just let me reassure all our own ‘celebrity’ customers that we respect your privacy and unless one day Her Majesty should give us a Royal Warrant we do not believe that you would wish us to publicise your patronage or that we were entitled to claim your continuing loyalty on anything but merit.

Whilst we understand that some high profile people in the world of films and TV believe that any publicity is good publicity we can’t believe that your publicist would choose to see you as a subject in a squabble between two plumbers who you may have employed to stick their heads down your loo.

We have been the chosen plumbers for hundreds of thousands of happy Londoners over 15 years and look forward to serving the capital for many years to come.

If you are looking for a Plumber in London to handle your emergency without a fuss and in absolute confidence call us.

Richard Clarke

Chairman
